Self-acceptance Exercises

Self-acceptance is not passive agreement to being mediocre. It's acknowledging facts: "Yes, I have these flaws and these strengths. This is my starting point." Without accepting where you are, you cannot move towards change, because you spend all your energy fighting reality and suppressing your "worse" sides.

Exercise 1: Mirror Work

This is a difficult but powerful exercise, popularized by Louise Hay.

  1. Stand in front of a mirror.
  2. Look yourself in the eyes for 2 minutes.
  3. Say aloud: "I accept you as you are. You are enough."
  4. Observe the emotions that arise (crying, anger, laughter). Stay in that contact.
