Children can't say, "I'm stressed, I need some time to myself." Instead, they yell, run around, act aggressively, or cry. This is their way of releasing tension. As a parent, you can teach them healthier methods of regulation.
"Spaghetti" Game (Muscle Relaxation)
This is an adaptation of Jacobson's method for the youngest.
- Tell your child: "You're a raw spaghetti noodle. Very hard and stiff! Tighten all your muscles, your arms, your legs, your face! Tightly, tightly!" (Hold for 5 seconds).
- "And now we throw you into hot water... You're a cooked spaghetti noodle! Soft, mushy, floppy. Relax completely on the floor."
- Repeat this several times. This teaches the child the difference between tension and relaxation.
