Most conflicts do not arise from ill will, but from poor communication. We use judgmental language ("You're lazy"), which provokes defensiveness. Nonviolent Communication (NVC), created by Marshall Rosenberg, is a model that allows you to talk about difficult matters in a way that builds connection, not walls.
The 4 Steps of the "Language of the Heart"
- Observation (without evaluation): "When I see socks on the floor..." (instead of: "When you make a mess again...").
- Feelings: "...I feel irritated..." (you are speaking about yourself, not accusing).
- Needs: "...because I have a need for order and cooperation." (you discover what is beneath the irritation).
- Request: "Would you be willing to put your socks in the laundry basket?" (a specific, doable request, not a demand).
