It's 3:00 AM. Your eyes open, and in a fraction of a second, your heart starts pounding, and a terrifying thought or feeling of threat appears in your mind. Nocturnal Panic Attacks are particularly difficult because they strike when you are vulnerable and sleepy. You don't know what's happening, which amplifies the fear.
Why 3:00 AM Exactly?
It's not the "witching hour"; it's biology. In the circadian rhythm, around 3:00-4:00 AM, melatonin levels start to drop, and cortisol levels (the stress hormone) slowly rise, preparing the body to wake up in the morning. If you have chronically elevated stress, this morning "spike" in cortisol is too abrupt and wakes you up in an alarm state (the "fight or flight" response). Additionally, at this time, blood sugar levels are at their lowest, which the brain can also interpret as a threat.
