"I slept 8 hours, but I'm still tired." This is a common problem. Time spent in bed does not equal sleep time, and light sleep does not regenerate as deeply as deep sleep. Sleep monitoring apps (sleep trackers) allow you to peek behind the scenes of your night and understand what's really happening when you close your eyes.
How Does It Work Without Wires?
Most apps (including those on smartwatches like Apple Watch) use an accelerometer (detects movement) and a microphone (detects snoring/breathing), as well as a heart rate monitor, to estimate sleep stages:
- Light Sleep (NREM 1 & 2): Heart rate slows, body relaxes.
- Deep Sleep (NREM 3 - Delta): Crucial for physical regeneration. The body is almost motionless.
- REM (Dream Sleep): Heart rate speeds up, eyes move, body is paralyzed (atonia). Important for mental health.
