There's something magical about falling asleep while a downpour rages outside. You feel safe under a warm duvet. The sound of rain is the most popular natural "sleep aid" in the world. Why does water falling from the sky affect us so much?
Evolutionary Safety
Our ancestors, hearing rain, knew two things:
- Predators usually don't hunt in the rain (poor visibility, wet conditions).
- There's no need to leave the cave for water or food – it's time to rest.
This signal of "It's safe, you can sleep" is encoded in our DNA.
