How To Fall Asleep In 60 Seconds

Counting sheep doesn't work. Forcing yourself to sleep works even less. If you want to fall asleep quickly, you need to trick your body and mind into a state of relaxation. The 4-7-8 breathing technique, popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, is a powerful tool to achieve this in under a minute.

The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique

This technique is a natural tranquilizer for your nervous system. It works by stimulating the vagus nerve, which triggers the body's relaxation response. The key is the long exhale.

  1. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a "whoosh" sound.
  2. Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds.
  3. Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
  4. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a "whoosh" sound, for 8 seconds.

Repeat this cycle for a total of four breaths. Many people report falling asleep before completing all four cycles.
