When Navy SEALs prepare for high-risk missions, they don't use complex sedatives. They use their breath. Box Breathing, also known as square breathing, is a tactical breathing technique that restores mental clarity, composure, and lowers cortisol levels within minutes. It's simple, symmetrical, and reliable.
How it works? Physiology of Breath
This technique works on two levels:
- CO2 Regulation: Holding your breath (retention) allows carbon dioxide levels in your blood to rise, which paradoxically improves brain oxygenation (Bohr effect) and calms chemoreceptors.
- Rhythmicity: The measured, repetitive rhythm has a hypnotic effect on the nervous system, synchronizing heart rate with breathing (RSA - respiratory sinus arrhythmia).
